Discovering Seaham Sea Glass

If you love authentic sea glass, then Seaham is a destination that needs no introduction. As a handmade sea glass jewellery maker, visiting this coastline had been on my wish list for years. Renowned across the world for its incredible coloured sea glass. Seaham offers collectors and jewellery makers the chance to find beautifully weathered treasures shaped by the North Sea. My first visit certainly lived up to its legendary reputation, and I already know it won’t be my last.

The Fascinating History of Seaham Sea Glass

Seaham’s unique sea glass story began in the late 1800s with the Londonderry Bottle Works, followed by the famous Seaham Glass Works. These factories produced everything from bottles to decorative art glass. With the waste pieces, experimental colours and imperfect glass were discarded into the sea near to Seaham Hall Beach.

Over many decades, the waves, tides and pebbles naturally tumbled these fragments. Transforming them into the smooth, frosted sea glass that collectors search for today. This industrial history is what makes this area’s sea glass so distinctive. Unlike many beaches, where sea glass is becoming increasingly rare. The surrounding beaches of Seaham continues to reveal beautiful and often unusual colours with every tide.

My First Seaham Sea Glass Hunt

Seaham Blue Multi Sea Glass

Seaham Multi Tones Sea GlassI couldn’t believe my luck on my very first visit to Blast Beach and Seaham Hall Beach. Among my favourite finds were several beautiful multi-coloured sea glass pieces (multis)—highly prized by collectors because of their rarity and unique patterns. I was also delighted to discover a stunning piece of opalescent sea glass. With its beautiful milky glow shimmering in the sunlight.

Alongside these special finds, I collected an amazing selection of gorgeous blues, greens and other vibrant colours that will soon become one-of-a-kind handmade sea glass jewellery.

From Seaham Beach to Handmade Sea Glass Jewellery

One of the things I love most about working with authentic sea glass is knowing that every piece has been shaped entirely by nature. No cutting, polishing or artificial frosting—just decades of the sea creating something truly unique.

The treasures I collected from Seaham will be carefully transformed into handmade rings, pendants, bracelets, finished in recycled sterling silver. Every piece I create celebrates the natural beauty and history of genuine sea glass, ensuring no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
