The Little Green Sea Glass Heart I Finally Made Into a Ring

Some pieces of sea glass are special from the moment you find them.

Finding a green sea glass heartThis beautiful green, heart-shaped piece was one of those finds. I discovered it on a local beach here in Cornwall and knew straight away that it was something a little bit different. A naturally heart-shaped piece is always exciting to find, but the lovely green colour made this one even more special.

Rather than turning it into jewellery straight away, I put it into my own little collection of special sea glass.  And there it stayed.

Waiting for the right piece

I have a small collection of sea glass that I keep aside because I just can’t quite bring myself to use it. They’re the pieces that are particularly unusual in colour or pattern, beautifully shaped or simply have something about them that makes them stand out.

This green heart definitely belonged in that collection.

I think there’s also something about knowing that once you’ve used a piece of sea glass, you can’t replace it. Every piece has its own shape, colour and story, created by years of being tumbled around by the sea. There will never be another one exactly like it.

So I kept this little heart safe, waiting for the right idea.Beachcombing sea glass heart cornish beach

The funny thing is, I rarely make jewellery for myself. I’m usually busy making pieces for customers, and somehow there never seems to be enough time to sit down and create something just for me.

A sea glass ring for me

So I made myself a ring.

I wanted to keep it simple and let the sea glass be the star, as that is my signature with all the jewellery I make. The natural heart shape is so lovely that it didn’t need anything complicated around it.

Every time I look down at the ring, I know exactly where it came from — one of my favourite beaches in Falmouth, Cornwall, where it had been quietly waiting amongst the stones and sand to be found.

It may once have been part of a bottle or some other glass object, before finding its way into the sea. Over the years, the waves and sand slowly removed its sharp edges and gave it that beautiful, frosted surface that makes sea glass so irresistible.

From special collection to something special to wear

I think sometimes we keep our favourite things tucked away because we’re waiting for the perfect moment to use them.

I’m rather glad I finally decided that this little green heart didn’t need to stay in a box. It deserved to be enjoyed.

And perhaps that’s one of the nicest things about making jewellery from sea glass — taking something with a story already behind it and giving it a new one.

This little heart has gone from being a special find on a Cornish beach, to a treasured piece in my collection, and now to a ring that I can wear every day.

I have a feeling it won’t be the last piece I make for myself… although I suspect my collection of “too special to use” sea glass might continue to grow!
