How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
Finding the perfect ring should be exciting, not stressful. Whether you’re treating yourself or buying a thoughtful gift, knowing the correct ring size helps ensure a comfortable fit and avoids the disappointment of a ring that’s too loose or too tight.
At Natural Wonder Jewellery, every handmade silver ring is crafted with care, so taking a few minutes to measure your finger accurately is well worth it.
The Most Accurate Method: Measure a Ring You Already Own
If you already have a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably, this is often the easiest option.
- Place the ring on a ruler and measure the inside diameter in millimetres.
- Measure across the centre of the ring from one inside edge to the other.
- Compare your measurement with a UK ring size chart to find your size.
This method works best if the existing ring is worn on the same finger and hand, as finger sizes can vary between hands.
Measure Your Finger at Home
Don’t have a ring to measure? You can easily measure your finger instead.
You’ll need:
- A thin strip of paper or a piece of string
- A pen
- A ruler marked in millimetres
Step 1 – Wrap the paper or string around the base of your finger. It should feel snug but not tight.
Step 2 – Mark where the ends meet.
Step 3 – Lay the paper or string flat and measure the length in millimetres. This is your finger circumference.
Step 4 – Use a UK ring size chart to match your circumference to the correct UK letter size.

Tips for the Best Fit
Measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its largest.
- Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold, as fingers naturally shrink.
- If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size somewhere between the two.
- Measure two or three times to make sure you get a consistent result.
- Wider rings generally feel tighter than narrow bands, so you may prefer to go up half or a whole size if you’re choosing a wide design.
Between Two Sizes?
If your measurement falls between sizes, it’s usually best to choose the larger size for a more comfortable fit. A ring should slide on with a little resistance and come off without excessive force.
Buying a Ring as a Gift?
If you’re planning a surprise, you may be able to borrow one of their existing rings and measure its inside diameter. Just be sure it’s worn on the correct finger, as ring sizes often differ from finger to finger.
